Award-Winning Skilled Nursing Design: Health Central Park Renovation by LB/A and ID
LB/A and ID proudly completed an award-winning renovation for Orlando Health’s Health Central Park, originally constructed in 1967. This community, once hidden behind a vast parking lot, featured outdated semi-private rooms and dark interiors. Recognizing the urgent need for modernization, the project aimed to reposition the community to meet the evolving expectations of current and future residents.
Through close collaboration with the client and consultant team, LB/A introduced a new 110-bed wing tailored for short-term Skilled Nursing, high-acuity residents, and Memory Care. This addition restored the facility’s total capacity to 228 beds. The redesign exemplifies modern Skilled Nursing Design by emphasizing resident comfort, privacy, and staff efficiency.
The previous site layout posed challenges, with the building set far back and common areas lacking natural light. LB/A addressed these issues by relocating the parking lot to a different area, bringing the structure closer to the street. This freed space for beautifully landscaped grounds featuring mature trees, walking paths, and outdoor areas accessible to residents and staff alike. The thoughtful integration of greenery enhances wellness and encourages outdoor engagement.
Each Skilled Nursing room is private, except for select couples’ units, and includes an individual bathroom. While this design increased per-unit costs, it prioritized privacy and resident autonomy. Advanced environmental controls allow individuals to personalize lighting, temperature, and sound, fostering a sense of comfort and control.
Health Central Park now offers a spacious, naturally lit gym with access to outdoor therapy paths. Residents benefit from diverse rehabilitation programs, including orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary, and cardiac therapies. These facilities reflect the latest innovations in senior care.
This exceptional project earned Health Central Park a prestigious accolade for Skilled Nursing Design, winning First Place in the 2024 SHN Architecture & Design Awards. Explore more about this achievement here.
