Fountain Inn Skilled Nursing was programmed and constructed to cater to and inspire meaningful lifestyles and experiences for newer generations of older Americans and their families.
The architectural concept included utilizing “evidence-based design for healing environments” to incorporate design features and supports that optimize a therapeutic intent throughout the environment. Traditionally, the design of rehabilitation and nursing facilities has been driven by construction and long-term operational costs. However, the driving force of Fountain Inn was stemmed from studies that well-designed healthcare environments can reduce anxiety and stress, accelerate recovery, shorten hospitalizations, reduce medication use, lessen pain, and promote a sense of well-being.
This project is a free-standing, two-story Skilled Nursing Facility adjacent to Waterman Hospital, the healthcare provider for the community. The 85,000 square-foot building has 120 beds and a full rehabilitation care center.
The first floor houses short-term residents during their rehabilitation, both physical and occupational therapy, while the second floor is for long-term residents. Therapy-related amenities include a 4,000 sf gym; a walk-in, hydro therapy pool; occupational therapy suite; and services such as intravenous therapy, pain management, and speech therapy. In addition to residents’ rooms and therapy-focused areas, the community also offers areas to enrich the residents’ stay, including a bistro-style cafe, a great room, a cybercafe, three independent dining rooms, a dependent dining room, a commercial kitchen, two hair salons, two chapel areas, and several activity/multi-purpose rooms.
The Town Center, which features Great Rooms, Cyber Lounge, Bistros and other hospitality spaces, was designed with floor-to-ceiling glass providing access to inviting and protected outdoor courtyard and activity areas that offer a variety of experiences. Covered outdoor participation areas, outdoor dining, walking paths, a water feature, fire pit and therapeutic landscaping materials are all included in the in the overall design to appeal to evolving lifestyle preferences for the outdoors.
